There have been many incarnations of this soup in my life, including as a staple at the health food deli where I worked–along with a catering job–to finance an 8-week trip to an ashram in India (that, my friends, is a story for another time.)
Lately I’ve simplified the soup to the bare bones for a quick and delicious low allergen side dish. Sometimes I have this with a side of tempeh, sometimes chicken, and it’s a really great side with salmon.

Dr. Samantha at Hyatt Training: Anti-inflammatory diets, what YOU need to know
Join us at HYATT TRAINING STUDIO for a guest lecture on Thursday, January 23 from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $20 for current Hyatt Training members / $30 for guests.
Chronic inflammation can plague athletes and non-athletes alike. It can impact our sport, and it can impact our day-to-day health, our risk for future illness, and even our state of mind. There are some health conditions that have been long understood to be inflammatory such as arthritis, asthma and allergies. But we now understand that inflammation plays a significant role in a plethora of health conditions including depression, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disease, even Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. I’ll be be sharing my expertise about anti-inflammatory diets and the effect in the body of certain foods we eat. Way beyond gluten-free, I will be discussing how foods affect you. Recovery, performance, brain power, etc. Learn how inflammation settles in your bodies and what you can do to treat it, and most importantly, how to prevent it. The presentation will include some of the science of inflammation as well as anti-inflammatory medications, herbs, supplements and nutritional strategies that you can implement right away. This is a lecture that everyone will get something useful from – not just those eating a particular diet. I’ll will speak from 6pm-7pm and then we will have a Gluten Free Beer Tasting and social hour sponsored by Harvester Brewing. A chance to catch up with your buddies while you’re not doing lunges.

I’d been eying (ok don’t you think it should be eyeing?) this thing for a year. At first I didn’t buy it because it seemed everyone in my online world was buying it and I eschew a trend. And early on it was spendy as it came as part of a package of products. And I’m very wary about anything that smells like new age rhetoric. And then there was the giant stack of books next to my bed that I didn’t seem to be getting to. But on the other hand, I’ve seen and enjoyed the lovely Miss LaPorte speaking, I really liked her other book Fire Starter Sessions, and we even have mutual friends. Shouldn’t I order it? Long story short, I didn’t. Until a few weeks ago.
I gave in- mostly because I’m working on not cutting off my nose to spite my face – and ordered the book from Barnes and Noble as it would be a week before Amazon was shipping. Then I promptly went to her site and downloaded the MP3s. Perhaps redundant but I had some free time the next day and once I get something in my head, well, that’s another blog post.
Curling up with a cup of tea and my headphones that night it became clear that buying the MP3s was not redundant at all. And I had, indeed, almost missed out on something fabulous. Slowing down enough to listen instead of read allowed me to dig in to the material more from my heart and less from my head. Closing my eyes and being in the work was right for me. I started to do the exercises she recommended. Yes a little ‘new-agey’ but also at the same time, not. Not at all. I listened to her ideas, most things I already ‘knew’ but wrapped in a different package it just all hit home in a new way. Here’s the premise: if you can identify your core desired feelings (CDFs), or how you want to feel on a day to day basis then you can better assess what you should do on a daily basis. You have a litmus test for every single decision. Are you heading toward your core desired feelings or away from them?
I’ve done many goal setting type classes in my day, and I love goals. I love setting my sights on something and accomplishing it. I love the feeling of crossing something off of my list. As I’m aging maturing, I no longer get tied up about whether I actually accomplish my goals or not. I don’t make New Year’s resolutions, I focus on themes. I change course when a course needs changing, and I give myself leeway when life gets in the way. I thought I had this shit down.
But what I found is this:
The Desire Map adds a dimension to goal setting that is a complete game changer.
Simply put, making decisions on a day-to-day basis that line up with how I want to feel, and making this part of my big picture plan is helping me stay more settled and more at ease. It doesn’t mean that life isn’t throwing shit at me, or that I don’t have bad days. There is, however, a subtle shift in how I’m interacting with my world. I’m more present with my 7-year-old, as ‘fluid’ is one of my CDFs and I’m so much less likely to get irritable or short with him if I’m rolling with things a bit more. I mean, there’s no real problem if my kid spends 5 extra minutes messing with his Pokemon cards before dinner. I could go on and on here but the point is that I highly recommend checking it out. You’ll be amazed to find how much easier it is to commit to yourself and your life when you’re clear about how you want to feel.
You can get yourself the book on Amazon, and the book and/or the audio and other goodies on Danielle’s site.
Enjoy,
Dr Samantha

I’ll admit to using an actual antiperspirant, rather than just a deodorant (which takes care of odor but doesn’t stop you from sweating) when I’m wearing a fancy dress or giving a talk to a large group. But truthfully I’d really rather not. Although we don’t have any decent long term studies that show that using antiperspirant is harmful, it just makes sense that it’s not a good idea to stop yourself from sweating. Sweating, after all, is a normal detoxification process that your body undergoes. I’m not as worried about it as many of my colleagues but I figure better safe than sorry.
So…I’ve been on the hunt for one that is strong but not chemical laden. I tried the primal pit paste and wasn’t a big fan (though others, like Food Babe, love the stuff) as well as Lavanila, and countless health food store brands that left something to be desired to say the least. The one exception is the Jason tea tree stick deodorant but I don’t love the smell…and on a really hot day it doesn’t hold up beyond a few hours.
I’ve tried to make deodorant a number of times. I’ve found that most of them work fine. BUT I don’t like applying it with my fingers. Not that I have a problem sticking my fingers in my armpits, but the cream is often hard to get off of my hands, even with soap.
One of my patients though swears by this recipe that she slightly adapted from the link below.
I’m going to try it and report back. How about you do the same?
Home Crafted Deodorant
-1/3 cup arrowroot powder
-1/3 cup Baking Soda
-10 drops of tea tree, lavender, or eucalyptus oil
-10 drops of tea tree, sandalwood, or eucalyptus oil
-2 tablespoons Vitamin E Oil
-3 tablespoons Coconut Oil
Mix everything up in a bowl until it forms a thick paste. Transfer to your storage container and then allow 24 hours to ‘set up’. Apply a small amount with your fingertips. Let me know if you do this, how it goes!
