For each person, there is a sweet spot of feeling the best you possibly can.

We live in a culture, where people are conditioned to expect aches and pains in life, so when you feel chronically tired, your stress levels are high, or your knees start to hurt, you think that’s just the way it is going to be.

The truth is that you don’t have to settle for feeling tired, run down, or overwhelmed, and you don’t have to settle for feeling average. For each of us there is a best that we can feel, and I guarantee that is better than you imagine.

I’m Dr. Samantha, a licensed Naturopathic Physician and Acupuncturist and owner of Evergreen Natural Health Center in Portland, Oregon.

It’s my job to help you figure out where you need to put your efforts to wake up every morning feeling vital and healthy. I work with clients around the globe on health and lifestyle concerns that are negatively impacting your life.

As a practitioner of both Eastern and Western medicine, with twenty years in primary care practice, I know without a doubt that true wellness is within your reach if you know what you need to do to get there.

And while the roadmap to your own best mental, physical and emotional health looks different for everyone, here’s what I can tell you for sure:

It’s not about treating symptoms or diseases – it’s about figuring out what things you have control over so you can live your life with the vitality and health you crave.

My clients come to me because they’re looking for a guide that takes a holistic view of health. You’re a person, not a chart of symptoms. Your health plan needs to not only take into account your symptoms and diagnosis but also should line up with your personal goals and values.

  • You feel like you’re doing all the right things, but you’re still feeling stressed out and less than your very best? We’ll get the the root of the problem.
  • You have a hard time getting enough sleep, because you only get time to yourself after the kids are in bed? We’ll take a look at what’s realistic and worthwhile to YOU before making a plan of action.
  • You have a diagnosis of high blood pressure, and you’re wondering if there’s an alternative to being on meds for the rest of your life? Let’s find out.
  • You want to lose weight, but you’re not willing to give up chocolate? We can work with that (as a matter of fact, I'll tell you food isn't bad and if you love chocolate it should be part of your life, period.)

As an integrative physician, I am in a position to guide you safely and effectively. Some alternative providers believe that you should never be on medication, but as far as I’m concerned, there are times a medication is the best and least harmful route. Other times there are relatively simple lifestyle and dietary changes that will ultimately resolve your concerns. Or it may be a combination of approaches that work best. It’s about what is right for you.

Through virtual consults, I’m able to work with you no matter where you’re located, in the comfort of your own home.

Here’s what you can expect from your first appointment:

screen-shot-2016-12-14-at-10-01-37-amBefore we meet, I review your medical records and lab.

In a 1-hour call, we review your medical history, current concerns, values around your health and current health goals and priorities. We’ll do a complete assessment together to get a complete picture of your overall health and wellbeing.

But what makes working with me different than what you’ve likely experienced before is that I go 3 steps further.

We also get clear about:

  • What you can control and what you can’t.
  • Your values and how you want to feel on a day-to-day basis.
  • What changes fit into your lifestyle and bandwidth with the least effort and best results.

With this 360 degree view of you as a whole person, we create your personal plan of action.

What I won’t do is present you with a laundry list of things you cannot eat or supplements you must take. Instead, I work with you individually to educate not only about what I think is going on in your body, but about what options you might have to meet your goals.

Although by virtual (online) consult, I can’t diagnose a medical condition or prescribe medications, I can offer a fresh perspective and a game plan for envisioning and creating the best health that you’re capable of achieving.

There are no formulas I follow because let’s face it, no two people are exactly the same, even with the same medical diagnosis. It is my job to use a combination of knowledge, experience and intuition along with an understanding of your individual health concerns and values to offer an approach that is truly unique to you.

In my virtual consults, I help people address concerns such as:

  • What supplements should I take?
  • Has my doctor done enough to figure out why I’m so tired?
  • There are so many opinions out there about what you should eat. What’s the right diet for me?
  • Why can’t I lose weight?
  • People tell me it’s normal to be tired when you’re a mom, entrepreneur, etc… but I’m ready for a new normal.
  • I feel like all my doctor gives me is medication. I don’t want to be dependent on meds, I want to feel better. Can you help me figure out another way?
  • I want out of the box ideas.
  • My doctor’s appointments feel rushed, I want to take more time with my health.

Following our first session together, you get specific recommendations on actions you can take immediately that get you on the path towards better health.

I’ll also provide you with a recommendation for next steps (if needed) based on your specific goals and desires. I tailor make a plan for you so we can get to the bottom of your concerns rather than just putting a band-aid on your symptoms.

With my guidance, creating a healthy lifestyle is well within your reach.

If you have questions about the sessions or what an investment would look like for you, check out the FAQs below. If you have a question that's not covered by the FAQ or you want to ask about your situation specifically, please feel free to contact me. I’d be more than happy to chat with you briefly about your health goals, and how we might be able to reach them together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a Naturopathic Physician?

Licensed naturopathic physicians have been to an accredited naturopathic medical school. In my home state of Oregon we can be licensed as primary care doctors. Our approach combines proven medical philosophies of various cultures and integrate these with modern scientific research. We also maintain that an underlying cause exists behind all disease and symptoms. We seek to address this underlying cause and restore the body back to health.

Both in my practice and my online business I also have a strong emphasis on education and empower you to take back control of your own health.

Modalities NDs use include but are not limited to: Clinical Nutrition, Botanical/Herbal Medicine, Dietary Supplements, Stress Management and Prevention, Exercise therapeutics, Lifestyle Counseling and Coaching.

What things would I see you for?

As a practitioner of both Western and complementary medicine, and 24 years under my belt of integrative medical practice in Portland, I can consult on just about everything that a primary care physician would treat. When I am doing online consultations I cannot formally diagnose or prescribe but for the most part I am able to address whatever concerns you have with educational coaching and consulting.

The following is an abbreviated list of conditions that I have helped people address with great success:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • PMS
  • Generalized malaise and fatigue
  • Migraines and other headaches
  • Perimenopause (no you don't have to have hot flashes!)
  • Menopausal symptoms
  • High cholesterol
  • Mild anxiety and depression
  • Insomnia
  • Allergies
  • Food sensitivities

Additionally, naturopathic medicine is also perfect for those who are feeling well but want to prevent disease in the future. We assess risk factors and give you tools for optimal health.

How are Naturopathic physicians trained?

We go to medical school just like any other doctor. The difference is that along with traditional studies, we also learn naturopathic philosophy and we’re extensively trained in nutrition, herbs, supplements, lifestyle counseling and other complementary modalities.

Regarding specifics required for licensing in Oregon, after pre-medical training, we must complete medical school at an accredited institution, where we graduate with a doctoral degree, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND). We are trained in basic medical and clinical sciences, physical and clinical diagnosis, Naturopathic philosophy and therapeutics. In Oregon, Naturopathic candidates must pass a board licensing examination, and then we are licensed to practice primary care medicine (with the exceptions of major surgery and a few prescription limitations such as atypical antipsychotics and chemotherapy drugs.)

Does virtual care really work?

If you have a mole that needs to be biopsied or you need to have the wax blasted out of your ears, no one can do that online. However, almost all of what I do does not require that you be sitting across a desk from me. We address your concerns from a whole-person centered approach and if you need some kind of exam I have you see someone locally and we will request that a full report be sent so I can review it. In short, distance consults are just that – consults – and medical care should be obtained locally for hands-on treatment.

Can you be my primary care doctor?

For local patients I can be a primary care doctor although in most cases I encourage patients to have a Western medical primary care provider for emergent situations and middle of the night crises. For distance-only consults, I am not providing medical care but consulting, so simply, no, I cannot be your primary care doctor. I can, however handle most things that need addressing by working with you and supporting your relationship with your local provider.

How long/how many sessions do I need to work with you?

This varies dramatically person to person, related both to the condition and the preferences of the client. Some clients want general advice and others want ongoing care to really get to the root of their issues.

After our first visit I will make recommendations that you can implement immediately to feel better. Beyond that, it’s up to you. Each person needs a different amount of support to finally get to where they want to be.

I tailor make a plan for you so we can get to the bottom of your concerns rather than just putting a band-aid on your symptoms. If you’re ready to feel great, I’ll leave no stone unturned until we get you there.

Will my insurance/Health savings account (HSA) pay for your services?

There are some insurances that will pay for online/virtual consultations but in these cases you will need a face-to-face contact with me first. In most states there is no coverage for naturopathic medicine regardless of whether it is face-to-face or virtual.

Your HSA may or may not be able to be used. Please contact your company directly to inquire about "health coaching" coverage with your HSA. If you have specific questions about your policy please contact me via my contact form and I’m happy to have someone get back to you.

How do I know if this will be worth my time and money?

You have to ask yourself what the long-term cost of not taking care of your health will be. It might be more expedient in the short term to ignore nagging conditions that don’t keep you from living your life, but you can be certain that most symptoms grow over time if you don’t deal with the underlying problem. And usually the longer it takes to address them, the harder it is to undo them.

If you are trying to decide if you are ready to financially invest in your health, you have to ask yourself a few basic questions…be honest with yourself.

  • What would it be worth for me to feel better/meet my health goals?
  • Would investing in my health at this time keep me from meeting my basic needs: food on the table, roof over my head, etc?
  • How will feeling well allow me to be more productive both at work and at home?
  • What is the long-term cost of not taking care of my health?
  • What could I give up, if needed, to prioritize my health at this time? Is that reasonable?
  • Can I truly afford to do this? Can I truly afford not to do this? It's a judgment free zone over here. You need to do what is best for you.
Can you help me manage my medications or get off of them completely?

If I am working with you virtually I can’t take you off of a medication or write a prescription, but I can discuss other options with you so you can work with your physician to make changes in your current plan if appropriate.

As far as my philosophy of medications goes, I believe ideally you wouldn’t need them. In my 24 years of practice I’ve had countless patients get off of many different types of medications. But, there are some times that a medication will be less harmful on your system than the symptom itself. Other times, it’s worthwhile to be on a medication while you make the changes you need to get your health in better order. And of course there are some cases where medications are simply necessary no matter how you slice it.

As a licensed naturopathic physician in a state that allows us prescription rights, I am able to discuss your medications with you from an integrative medical perspective in a way that differentiates me from other practitioners such as health coaches, unlicensed naturopaths, nutritionists, counselors and dietitians.

Isn’t naturopathic medicine kind of woo-woo?

I am here to provide health care that is in alignment with your values. Period.

My patients and clients are a diverse lot and seek naturopathic care for a variety of reasons.

Some prefer to have a whole person approach to health care, some have reached the end of what Western medicine can offer them, others want only nutritional counseling but are fine being on medications. I have a practical and down to earth approach to your care and will work with you to make sure that your needs are met, whatever they may be. And if you’re a bit woo, I can meet you there too. 🙂
