Summer is in full swing and for many people summertime goes hand in hand with vacations and out of town adventures. Day trips are planned to discover new hiking spots or swimming holes in the mountains. Longer road trips also become more common in the summer, taking time off to visit out of town relatives.
Unfortunately, for some people these summertime adventures come with the price of car or motion sickness. The main symptoms of motions sickness include; feeling unwell, nausea, vomiting in severe cases, headaches, and cold sweating. In Chinese Medicine symptoms of motion sickness most often correspond to a disharmony of the Stomach organ system and meridian network. Here are 3 tips from Chinese Medicine to help you get the most out of your vacation time, and maybe even enjoy the journey to your destination of choice. These tips are appropriate for all ages and work great for sea sickness and other forms of motion sickness as well.
Prevention is key. If you know you are prone to motion sickness, start using these tips before you feel symptoms.
1. Acupressure. PC 6 is a magic point for relieving many different forms of nausea, including nausea due to motion sickness. One of the main actions of this point is to alleviate nausea by harmonizing the Stomach. This acupuncture point is so well know for its effectiveness in reducing nausea that you can buy motion sickness bracelets that stimulate this point by putting pressure on PC 6. You can stimulate this point on yourself, a friend, or child using acupressure. Acupressure is the use of gentle pressure of a finger on a specific acupuncture point to stimulate its function.
Find PC 6. This point is located on the inner forearm about two thumb’s widths away from the wrist. PC 6 is located in between the two tendons in the middle of the forearm.
2. Ginger. In Chinese Medicine ginger is well know for its ability to harmonize the Stomach and alleviate nausea. Ginger chews can be found at most health food stores and are a tasty way to get a large dose of ginger and prevent motion sickness.
3. Acupuncture. Schedule 3-5 acupuncture visits prior to your trip depending on the severity of symptoms that you experience. Acupuncture harmonizes and balances your body to decrease your susceptibility of getting motion sickness.
